Sidney Moses Lance’s name is synonymous with many things; a 16 year food and beverage veteran, an entrepreneur of “cocktail dreamers,” a man who doesn’t quit, a husband, father and most recently a maker of some of Savannah’s finest shrubs called “Rhoot Man”. In a nutshell, a shrub, is a combination of fruit, sugar, and vinegar. The sweet, acidic mixer gets its name from the Arabic word sharab, which means, “to drink.” A shrub can be consumed on its own with club soda, but added to cocktails; it provides a distinct tangy bite that adds complexity and a bold depth of flavor. Today’s consumer uses shrubs to create refreshing cocktails, vinaigrettes and even marinades. Rhoot Man’s flavors include The Cucumber, The Pineapple Cilantro, The Wildberry Coconut Mint and The Honey Ginger Peppercorn. Whether you are using Rhoot Man for your signature cocktail around the pool, as an alternative to soda for the kids or to dress your Arugula salad, you will be amazed at the complex flavors. Read below to find out where you can score your own bottle of Rhoot Man, as well as, a St. Patrick’s Day Cocktail that you don’t want to miss.

What exactly is a shrub and how should people use them?

Shrubs could be described best as a vinegar base syrup. You use them to enhance your beverage.

What sets Rhoot Man apart?

I think what sets Rhoot Man apart from other mixers is that my products are all natural and I make every one personally. I see the production of this product through from start to finish. From personally selecting every ingredient that goes into each cook, bottling, labeling and distributing. My product is the easiest mixer to turn a somewhat good cocktail experience into one of the best you’ve ever had without having to be behind a bar to make it. You can also cook with these as well as just simply enjoy a mock cocktail. Also the kids love the shrubs as well!

What is your favorite shrub and why?

Honey Ginger Peppercorn because it goes well with everything. I also have terrible allergies so it helps with that and it’s really good for your digestive system.

Where can people buy your products?

Right now every Saturday at the Forsyth Farmers Market and starting March 14th at the Tybee Island Farmers Market. Everyone can also follow me on Instagram @rhootmanco to see where we will be setting up for Pop-Up Market throughout Savannah and the South East Region. We have a really big one coming up at the end of this month in Miami, and I can’t wait for that one!

If someone isn’t familiar with Rhoot Man, which product do you suggest they try and what should they make with it?

Wildberry Coconut Mint Shrub is a true crowd favorite. The reason for that is because it goes well with anything you can simply add it to the club soda or water just to flavor it up a little. Or you can add it to vodka gin rum or tequila to make a quick and easy delicious cocktail. I would go with the Tomochichi which is made with 1 1/2 oz vodka, 1 oz Wildberry Coconut Mint shrub, 3/4 lime juice and 1/4 oz agave nectar. Shake this guy up and server over ice and get ready for another.
