Wearing masks is necessary to protect you and those around you but they come with some frustrations. Skincare irritation has people asking, “What is the best way protect my skin when wearing a ?” We reached out to Savannah’s own Lenon Page, owner and manager of Spa Bleu on Bull Street in Savannah to get some professional advice. Spa Blue has been voted the #1 day spa for 9 years running!

What is the best material/type of mask to wear to protect your skin?

Leave the N95 & Surgical Masks for the Healthcare workers….the best material for a homemade mask is tightly woven, 100% cotton. It is effective for protections and more gentle on the skin. The cotton provides a good amount of breath ability for you and your skin. Materials such as denim and canvas are too rough on the skin. Also very important is to never spray your mask with Lysol which could cause a chemical burn, rash or more. Always wash your mask instead.

What type of cleansers should be applied before or after mask wear?

As a good rule of thumb, wash your face and neck with a gentle cleanser before putting your mask on. If possible, throughout the day, use a gentle toner to wipe away mid-day bacteria. After you unmask for the day, use an exfoliating cleanser to rid the skin of bacteria and buildup.

Should you switch to unscented/fragrance free cleansers for mask wearing?

Not necessarily “fragrance-free”, most of your organic cleansers are going to have a fragrance because of the plants they are made of. Pay attention to the ingredients to make sure the cleanser does not consist of synthetic fragrance additives, as those can aggravate your skin.

Are there specific ingredients in moisturizers you should look for to reduce inflammation?

Definitely! Look for ingredients such as Chamomile, Aloe, Rose Water, Tea Tree, Shea Butter, Grape Seed Oil

If your skin is irritated from wearing a mask, should you take a break from certain products?

Absolutely, we want to avoid things like coconut oil, mineral oil, heavy moisturizers, silicone, alcohol…these are just a few acne inducing ingredients.

What products/brands do you recommend? Where to buy?

I recommend and stand by our skin care line, Eminence Organic Skin Care, which you can purchase on our website at www.spableu-sav.com, in-store or over the phone. This line is amazing! They only use organic ingredients that nourish the skin. They are super concentrated with no preservatives or fillers added. There are some other great product lines out there as well, just to name a few: Aveda, Kiehls, TRUE Botanicals and Nourish Bath Products right here in Savannah. All of these lines can be found online and some in stores locally.

Are there any kinds of makeup that are better to be worn under the mask than others?

We recommend not wearing makeup underneath your mask. It’s OK to go natural for the time being. But if you just can’t bring yourself to do that, make sure to avoid heavy cream foundations. Maybe consider enhancing your eye & brow makeup. Now is the perfect time for that.

Would you create a step-by-step regime of how to care for your skin when you’re wearing a mask.

Cleanse before and after masking, exfoliate and apply a face mask 2-3 times per week, moisturize daily!  These are important!

Do you provide a facial that is good for mask issues?

We sure do. We have several options for facials. All of our facials are tailored to each individual. The most important thing we do is clean and nourish the skin. We have several ways to treat breakouts, whether it be a peel and masking treatment, mechanical exfoliation or hydration…the list goes on. I suggest a consultation with one of our aestheticians so we can assess and assist your skin.
