SCAD Museum of Art invites teens to special teen workshops this summer, June and Late July 2022-4-6PM Thursdays

Admission to the workshop is $10 each. All skill levels welcome. Materials are supplied. Boxed dinner provided. To sign up, email Kristin Poitras, manager of museum visitation and programming, at kpoitras@scad.edu.

Upcoming summer teen workshops @ SCAD MOA include:

Thurs. June 2 2022: Transcend 2D self-portraiture. Hayv Kahraman’s images of Middle Eastern women are representations of the artist’s mind, body, and spirit. Tour her exhibition The Touch of Otherness, then give form to a 2D marionette that can be posed and positioned to represent your own life experiences. Learn more here.

Thurs. June 9 2022: Join SCAD photography specialists to learn hot techniques for high fashion photos. Bring a camera photo or digital camera. Learn more here.

Thurs. June 16 2022: Design experimental furniture with unusual materials. Discover the dexterous materiality of Sang Hoon Kim’s works in his SCAD MOA exhibition Soft Spot. Following a gallery tour and discussion of the artist’s alternative use of an unlikely material, create your own furniture works using — surprise! — newspaper and tape. Learn more here.

Thurs. June 23 2022: Chill and thrill at color theory. Tour Katharina Grosse’s exhibition Chill Seeping and discuss the many ways of looking at the work. Then experiment with an alternative dyeing method to create unique color field studies. Learn more here.

Thurs. July 21 2022: Explore Patrick Dougherty’s immersive, site-specific sculpture made of tree saplings. Then design your own whimsical creation to enliven our human desire to dream and imagine. Get immersed in land art. Learn more here.

Thurs. July 28 2022: Explore Southern history and vernacular. Watch A Thousand Miles and Counting, a SCAD-produced documentary exploring William and Ellen Craft’s historic journey to freedom. Then discover the revolutionary work of artist Beverly Buchanan, whose experimental “shack” structures explore the relationship between memory — personal, historical, or geographical — and place. Afterward, work with varied and uncommon materials to build your own model dwelling. Learn more here.

First Friday with Sulfur Studios, June 3rd-5:00pm-9:00pm

Join them on June 3rd from 5 – 9 pm for First Friday Festivities! The evening will feature their Sulfur Street Fair (on 39th Street between Bull St. and Desoto Ave.) with over 15 artist vendors, Sweet Spice Food Truck, live painting, and performances by The Saltwata Players, Performing Artist Collective of Savannah and more! In their Main Gallery they’re hosting the Opening Reception for “Past Presence: Commemorating Juneteenth,” their 2nd Annual exhibition commemorating Juneteenth. This exhibition features artists from across the country whose work takes into consideration their own personal history – present or past – as it relates to the Black experience in the United States. These artists explore themes of ancestry, modern media narratives, vulnerability and resilience. They’ll also celebrate the finale of their ON::View Artist-in-Residence Timothy Harding’s month-long project. @timothy.harding Harding has been pursuing a project centered around the construction of a painting stretcher bar system as a site-responsive object. This work is an extension of his long-standing interests in exploring the relationship between the space of painting and the physical space they inhabit as objects. The public is invited to see the culmination of this exploration during Friday’s project Finale. Follow @onviewresidency to see more.
